KICKASS
SKATEPARK BUILDERS |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
New
Market, VA Skatepark |
 |
|
| This could
be the worst skatepark in Virginia, if not in the USA. It really pains me
to see something like this. This poor little park was put together with
the best of intentions (really, I am being serious). I have seen better
backyard ramps built by kids than this. Another problem is the layout. The
two quarter pipes are so far away from each other to be of any use and they
are not in front of any of the other ramps! To hit any of the "rails"
you need to push like a mo-fo to gain any speed to get on the "lack
of" fun box. It is a shame that all this hard work and money went into
this. Thank god it is free to use! (who in their right mind pay to skate
this?) |

this
is what happens when non-skateboarders try to build a skatepark! |

|
Here is the story...
New Market, VA is a small town located at the bottom of Shenandoah County.
They have a small, but active skater population that was using the town
area for their sessions. Since the town didn't have the money for a skatepark,
a local "baseball dad" took to the task of raising money, donated
materials, etc and built the park. |
| While he
probably meant well, it's obvious he knew nothing about skateparks or skateboards
and had never been to a skatepark. He ordered some ramp plans. He lined
up free asphalt for the pad, a fence, donated lumber and started building
the ramps. The result you see in the photos - and the town wonders why the
kids avoid the park. Read the posted rules... USE AT YOUR OWN RISK? No shit!-
just don't fall on or around any of the ramps. The plywood was nailed, not
screwed. Thin metal flashing was used instead of countersunk metal angle
iron in most places. Thin flashing was used in the thresholds instead of
steel. The list of dangerous mistakes goes on... |

| DIRECTIONS:
If you really want to go to this place or just stop by for a laugh, take
exit 264 off of I-81 (New Market) and head into town (East). Turn right
after McDonalds. Follow that road about a mile, and it will lead into the
town park. This "skatepark" is located across the parking lot
from the pool. |
