KICKASS
SKATEPARK BUILDERS |

| Manchester,
NH Skatepark |
| |
|
| The Manchester,
NH Skatepark is the biggest waste of skatepark space that I have ever seen.
Rodney Mullen, Steve Rocco, Kevin Harris, Per Welinder, and Pierre-Andre
could all simultaneously perform freestyle demos, complete with their own
individual boom-boxes and crowds of gawkers in the flat open space between
the trannys in this behemoth park. It is literally the size of a football
field. The city of Manchester must have displaced 600 families or so with
eminent domain for this massive park. |
| |
| Anyways,
did I mention this park is huge? It's the size of some made for TV streetpark
course, but without any thing in between. The park consists of one humongous
basin with big tranny all around, a big spine, a few big hips, a pyramid
with some quick rails-big,big,big, too big. There is also a L-shaped bowl,
and a separate kiddie area in the back. On the perimeter of the park are
ridable Jersey barriers. |
| |
| Unfortunately,
I showed up at this park on a WEDNESDAY, which along with SUNDAY, ARE BIKES
ONLY ALL DAY LONG. You may have noticed the multitude of bikers and complete
absence of skaters in the pictures. Apparently, there were some incidents
of violence at the park between the BMXers and the skaters of this rugged
New Hampshire mill town, and thus the need for the daily separation. I find
it somewhat mind-boggling that they cannot get along enough to find a way
to share a park the SIZE OF KANSAS. This park must have been designed with
bikes in mind from the beginning, as they were flying all over the place,
enjoying the wide open space. Because I didn't get to actually skate it,
I assume skaters would find themselves winded quite often by the pushing
involved to just get from one wall to the other. Better clean those bearings! |
| |
| The park
has a skate guard for some reason, who only duty seemed to be to keep those
who weren't riding behind this ridiculous red line. (see pic below) When
I went walk around to take these photos, she ordered me to stay behind the
line. I turned on the charm and explained that I was a professional, and
my journalistic obligations required me to cross the line. She tried to
protest, but I just walked away-whatever. Poor girl was probably just doing
this for her college applications resume or something. |

The
recap: No pads, no fees, BIKES ONLY on WEDNESDAY and SUNDAY. Oil those
bearings and get ready to push.
