| The
most interesting thing about this park is not so much the park itself but
its location and its locals. It is right on the water of Boston Harbor,
with a nice view of the Tobin Bridge and downtown Boston. Every time I have
gone there, I have encountered something different. You can almost always
count on a large amount of broken glass and other debris scattered heavily
around the park (but that just adds to the fun, right?) On separate occasions
I have showed up to find the police interrogating a group of teenagers right
next to one of the quarterpipes. Another time the local kids held an informal
boxing match on the adjacent basketball courts, gloves and all. And one
time, the fireboat along with the rest of the fire department arrived to
douse a fire that was set in the warehouse on the pier next door. |
| DIRECTIONS:
From the north, take Rt. One to Rt. 60 East, towards Logan Airport.
Take the Saratoga St. exit, the one before the airport, and follow it
to Chelsea St. You will stop at Chelsea St, turn left onto it for a moment,
then immediately bear right back onto Saratoga. Follow Saratoga all the
way to its end, at Central Square. Go straight across Meridian St., and
turn right onto Border St. You will pass the Shaw's Supermarket on your
left. Turn left about an eighth of a mile after Shaw's into the Umana/Barnes
Middle School. The skatepark is all the way in the back on the water.
From
the South: Take the Sumner Tunnel exit off of Interstate 93. Head
through tunnel, and immediately after exiting the tunnel, exit right at
the "Local Exit" sign. At that light, turn left, go under the
highway you were just on, and turn left again onto Porter St. Follow Porter
straight past the tunnel toll booths to Central Square. Head through Central
Square, and turn left onto Border St. by the Shaw's Supermarket. Follow
Border for an eighth of a mile, and turn left into Umana/Barnes Middle
School. The skatepark is in the back on the water. |
