Uintas Pipe

A Trip to Hailey, ID, July 1-5, 2004
Story & Photos by The Chraveler

the uintas pipe. None of us had ever ridden a "natural" full pipe, meaning one that was built by the federal government...that truck in the pic and whomever owned it spooked us out at first, but then we decided screw it and assaulted that hole
traveling light, we snuck up to the dam, and each of us squeezed through the busted gate, and rapelled down the 12 feet or so into the spillway...I went last, and as I did, I looked up at the top of the dam. A fat family of like 8 chubbers in neon windbreakers and jelly shoes comes lumbering across the top of the earthen dam, and spots me sneaking through the gate. The head chubber squauked something friendly to the tune of "oh, we were just waiting for you to go!" I didn't stop to respond, though, I just dropped down into the spillway, and that shit was on...
it was damp and cool inside that ol' pipe. It was real tight, probably 10-12 or maybe actually 16 in diameter-I am making an unmeasured guess. Real loud and echoey too - we were probably sending out a sonic boom out of that tube and across the valley! There was all sorts of calcium deposits leaking through and building up along all of the seams in the concrete walls of the pipe - you just had to roll over and skate right through em. there was a pesky little stream of water that we had to brush away before each run, but it was an unforgetable session that every skater should strive to have at least once in their lifetime...we trespassed on federal property - buck buck!

lookin' out the top of the ammo end

nice shot grab jerry!
getting out of the pipe was a real test in upper body strength and stamina..there was a log we used, but that thing broke as I was using it to get out and came cracking down on my shoulder - it smarted but it was funny - good thing I was wearing my helmet!
the other dam we found-it was much bigger but not skateable
we jetted from the dam, and took some graded gravel road back to civilization. We passed by some kick ass scenery, and found another earthen dam, but after a recon mission it was discovered to be unskateable...from there, we had a few hours of daylight, so we headed for the new park in Oakley...
